Credit Suisse to refer hedge funds to BNP

0

Credit Suisse Group AG and BNP Paribas SA reached an agreement in which the Swiss firm will recommend its hedge fund clients move to the French bank after it decided to exit the business.

The Swiss lender said it signed a referral agreement to “support its Prime Services and Derivatives Clearing customers in their selection of alternative providers for such services,” according to a statement on Monday. It didn’t provide further details.

Credit Suisse is exiting the prime brokerage unit that lost billions in the collapse of Archegos Capital Management as it moves more capital into its steadier wealth management business.

That was the centerpiece of a new strategic plan announced by the bank last week, as Chairman Antonio Horta-Osorio seeks to move the bank past one of the most turbulent periods in its recent history.

BNP is already in the midst of taking on Deutsche Bank AG’s prime brokerage business as part of the German bank’s 2019 exit from equities trading.

That deal was more involved, as it included the transfer of assets and employees rather than just encouraging clients to move themselves. The transfers are scheduled to complete this year.

Prime-brokerage divisions are vaunted within investment banks, both for generating profits and cultivating relationships with wealthy hedge-fund managers.

They typically produce about one-third of equities-trading revenue across Wall Street and generated about $15 billion last year, according to data from research firm Coalition Greenwich.

Still, the businesses require significant capital as a buffer against potential lending losses and investments in technology.

Moderna finds that inventing a COVID-19 vaccine was the easy part

0

Moderna Inc. has some of the highest-flying science in the biotech business. It brought its messenger RNA vaccine to the market in less than a year, faster than almost anyone thought possible.

But more than 10 months after U.S. regulators first authorized its potent shot, Moderna is finding that inventing a Covid-19 vaccine was actually a relatively straightforward task compared with what would come next: ramping up vial-filling operations on multiple continents and distributing the vaccine to countries around the world in the middle of a devastating pandemic.

Moderna shares plummeted on Thursday after it announced it would be able to supply only 700 million to 800 million vaccine doses this year, down from its previous projection of 800 million to 1 billion doses. It attributed the lower forecast not to any complications in making the mRNA itself, an issue it dealt with earlier this year, but to delays in filling vials and delivering them in international markets.

That added to pressure on the stock that has been building for months. Since Aug. 9, Moderna has dropped 51%, wiping out almost $100 billion in market value.

In fact, the company says it already has produced more than 900 million doses of the bulk substance for its vaccine, which consists of messenger RNA coated in lipid nanoparticles. But it apparently won’t be able to get all those doses into vials and where they need to go before next year.

On a conference call with analysts this week, Chief Executive Officer Stephane Bancel tried to make the best of it, comparing the delays to “teething problems” as Moderna attempts to expand from a boutique biotech firm in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to a global vaccine distribution powerhouse.

Moderna, of course, isn’t the first vaccine maker to run into production delays. Johnson & Johnson, AstraZeneca Plc and Novavax Inc. — or their manufacturing partners — have all hit production snags that have slowed rollouts of their vaccines at some point during the past year.

Novavax CEO Stanley Erck said in an interview Friday that his company had no factories of its own at the outset of the pandemic, and had to create a network of internal and external production facilities from scratch. Among other problems it encountered were shortages of things like filters and 4,000-liter bags needed for producing its vaccine in insect cells.

“Seemingly simple things ran out of global supply,” Erck said. But now, he said, the problems are mostly solved and the company and its partners should be able to produce 200 million doses a month by early next year.

Bloomberg

contrast

One company that has had fewer production problems this year is Moderna’s vaccine rival Pfizer Inc., which partners with BioNTech SE. Pfizer has already produced 2.6 billion doses and shipped 2 billion of them this year. Earlier this week it raised its 2021 forecast for vaccine sales to $36 billion, with plans to produce 4 billion doses next year.

Unlike Moderna, giant companies like Pfizer have existing factories to turn to, long-term relationships with an extensive base of suppliers, as well as numerous supply-chain experts to plan for every possible contingency when production runs into unexpected snags, said Julie Swann, a health systems expert at North Carolina State University. That gave Pfizer a big advantage over Moderna, Swann said.

Prior to the pandemic, Pfizer already had capacity to make 200 million vaccine doses a year, with 12 biologics and vaccine-manufacturing facilities in 10 countries. Moderna’s lone factory was a plant in Norwood, Massachusetts, that had never produced anything at large scale before Covid.

Bancel said Moderna didn’t have a single employee in Europe on its commercial team before the pandemic.

“It’s not surprising that if someone had a problem, it would be them,” said Swann. Moderna has relied entirely on contract manufacturers to put its vaccine into vials, the process known as fill and finish. While that helps it produce more shots, it also creates a complex web the company needs to manage.

Procedures need to be precise when producing tightly regulated pharmaceutical products, meaning it can take time to develop them. At every factory, doses have to be meticulously tested for sterility and the correct dosages.

And then there are the complexities of shipping and distribution. In the U.S., where most of its doses went in the first half of the year, the federal government paid McKesson Corp., the country’s largest pharmaceutical distributor, to deliver Covid shots. That meant Moderna could focus primarily on making its vaccine. Now, as it turns to international shipments, Moderna and its contractors have become major exporters of a highly regulated drug product. Those challenges will only grow as Moderna expands to poorer nations without well-developed infrastructure.

When delivering vaccines overseas, Moderna must coordinate clearing customs, providing certifications and signing off on deliveries, among other tasks, a spokeswoman said in an email to Bloomberg. Many of the doses are going to countries for the first time and the process needs time to smooth out, she said.

There’s a process to package, test and release vials before they’re shipped, all of which require more workers, she said. The company has hired more people to accelerate the process.

Moderna still expects to sell $15 billion to $18 billion worth of its shot this year and even more next year, making it one of the best-selling pharmaceutical products in the world.

“Pfizer just has extraordinary manufacturing built up all over the world, so the fact that Moderna has done as well as it is, it’s sort of like a David compared to the huge Goliath of Pfizer,” says Tim Springer, a Harvard scientist and an early Moderna investor who still holds shares. “It’s extraordinary.”

Bloomberg

Kids doses

Moderna’s lagging international supply chain isn’t its only recent setback. The company is falling further behind Pfizer in getting its Covid vaccine on the market for adolescents and children. There are concerns that its shot, which uses a higher mRNA dose than the Pfizer one, may have a slightly higher rate of rare heart inflammation side effects.

Moderna’s application for authorization of its vaccine in kids 12 to 17 has been at the Food and Drug Administration since June, and the agency may not complete its review of heart side effects in children until January, according to Moderna. Its own safety database shows no increased heart inflammation risk for its vaccine in children, Moderna said Thursday.

By contrast, Pfizer’s vaccine has been available for children 12 and up since May, and it received U.S. emergency clearance to sell a lower dose for kids 5 to 11 in October.

Going forward, antiviral pills could reduce demand for Covid vaccines among those who are vaccine-hesitant. Pfizer on Friday said it would seek U.S. clearance for its Covid-19 pill, after the five-day treatment dramatically slashed hospitalizations and deaths in a big trial of high risk patients. The revelation sent Moderna shares cratering almost 17%.

Springer sees enormous potential for Moderna’s pipeline, which includes a combination shot for flu and Covid, mRNA-based cancer vaccines and an mRNA treatment for cystic fibrosis patients who don’t benefit from current drugs.

Those efforts could take years to come to fruition. For now, Moderna faces investors searching for proof it can deliver more of its lone existing product.

Reliance and National Multiplex Chains lock 55% revenue share for Rohit Shetty’s Sooryavanshi

0

It was one of the most hectic days in the Hindi film industry as never before has the advance booking of a film opened up less than 12 hours before the first show. Bollywood Hungama has been a constant in reporting the revenue sharing disagreements between Reliance Entertainment and the National Multiplex Chains.

Reliance and National Multiplex Chains lock 55% revenue share for Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshi

While all through the week, Reliance was adamant on 60% revenue share for Week 1, National multiplex chains were refusing to up the usual norm of 52.5%. Finally, the stakeholders settled late on Thursday night with advance bookings opening up at 10.30 pm. “While Rohit Shetty kept a bit of distance from the revenue share issue till Wednesday, he was completely involved in all decision making on Thursday. Right from morning, he headed all meetings with Reliance and Multiplexes trying to find a solution. He held on to the film for a big screen release for 20 months and wanted it to reach the audience all across India in the best possible way. Hence, letting go off a multiplex release was not exactly an option,” an insider informed Bollywood Hungama.

The insider adds, “Finally, Rohit brought Reliance and Multiplex Association on the common ground with all parties agreeing to a revenue sharing model of 55% in the first week. This was somewhere in between the first offer of 50% made by national chains and 60% made by Reliance. Rohit even tried to sort out the show sharing issues with Disney. While the studio wasn’t available for the meetings, Rohit sat down on the showcasing front to ensure that Sooryavanshi gets maximum showcasing without compromising much on the Hollywood Film, Eternals. Finally, things fell in place on this busy Diwali day.”

The movie is now releasing on nearly 4200 screens in India today and is expected to set the box office on fire. Sooryavanshi features Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh and is a part of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe.

Here’s What’s in Store For HYBE Corp in 2022

0

From NFTs, webtoons, web novels, a new girl group and more, the South Korean entertainment giant’s 2021 briefing today outlined several new ventures

In the past year, HYBE has undergone major organizational and structural changes that have influenced its workings— the major one being its strategic partnership with American executive, Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings (to fast-track HYBE’s larger vision of expanding in America under HYBE America.)

Elaborating on the company’s vision of becoming a ‘global entertainment lifestyle platform company,’ HYBE’s Chairman, Bang Si-Hyuk and co-CEO of HYBE America, Braun, opened the company’s hour-long, pre-recorded community briefing earlier this morning.

As of today, HYBE operates under seven verticals. What started with music and artists under Big Hit Music has now created growth and expansion opportunities in e-commerce (Weverse Shop), game, original content (the most popular one being global pop group BTS’ variety show, Run BTS!), publishing and education business (Learn Korean With BTS!). The entertainment giant’s fan-centric platform, Weverse, has also seen an exponential rise in its downloads with fans from over 200 countries engaging with it.

Taking the business beyond music, the company’s strategy will now cater to the growing popularity of original stories as well as exploring avenues to ensure fans are always connected with the artist and their music. “So just like music and artists, stories can be the new IP,” explained Braun. Aside from building original content in America and South Korea, the company also shared its plans on venturing into fintech, creating immersive games, growing its artist roster and more.

Here’s what you can expect from HYBE Corp in the coming year:

More Original Content

Employing the power of original content, HYBE will be taking its story-based intellectual property to Naver’s WEBTOON and social writing platform Wattpad.

The company has announced the premiere of four original web stories in the form of webtoons and web novels. Focused around HYBE’s artists, the stories will create a unique fan experience, offering an additional medium to stay connected with their artists.

With Wattpad hosting HYBE’s original stories, we may be looking at a partnership that extends beyond web novels. A possibility stemming from this partnership could manifest as big-budget feature films of said web novels under Wattpad Studios— home to the famous Harry Styles fan fiction-turned-feature film, After Trilogy.

The roll-out plan for HYBE’s original stories stands as follows:

7 Fates: CHAKHO with BTS

Release date: 15th January 2022

Synopsis: Set in the near future, the urban fantasy story is inspired by the ‘chakhogapsa’ (tiger hunters from the Joseon Dynasty). Based on the intricate BTS Universe, 7 Fates: CHAKHO will explore the life of seven boys brought together by faith and why they must stay together despite the trials and tribulations they’ve faced.

Dark Moon: The Blood Altar with ENHYPEN (To be released as a series)

Release date: 16th January 2022

Synopsis: An urban fantasy and teen romance based on the lives of young vampires transcended by the beauty of a girl with her own secrets. Aside from romance, the story will also explore the bitter-sweet relationship between vampires and werewolves.

The Star Seekers with TOMORROW X TOGETHER

Release date: 17th January 2022

Synopsis: Based on the lives of an idol group that lives in a world where magic and reality coexist, The Star Seekers will narrate the tale of young boys who realize the magic powers they possess and untangle the secrets around the same.

Crimson Heart

Release date: TBA

Synopsis: A coming-of-age story of a group of young girls living in the controlled territory of Refugia. Upon finding a mysterious red book and necklace, the girls embark on an adventure to a strange world.

Interactive Games

Ensuring fans enjoy artists and music in a more “diverse and interactive way,” HYBE Corp is currently developing a new game alongside BTS.

While previous games such as BTS WORLD saw the seven members involved at a character-level only, the forthcoming game has incorporated their involvement at a developmental level too, “You’ll get to play a game where our efforts are put in,” revealed BTS rapper, songwriter and producer SUGA.

Artist Livestreams on Weverse

With Weverse Company, a subsidiary of HYBE, acquiring 49 percent of shares in V Live and Naver, fans can expect to see a revamped, highly fan-centric version of Weverse early next year.

The subsidiary is all set to introduce the ‘V-Live’s Spot Live’ feature as an addition to the timely ‘moment’ notifications (updates from when artists create a post or comment on one) subscribers of the platform receive.

NFTs ( Non-Fungible Token)

Under a new venture between HYBE Corp and Dunamu— South Korea’s largest crypto exchange operator— fans can soon expect to lay their hands on NFTs.

Curated around HYBE’s artist IP-based content and other products, fans can own digital versions of various original assets. The association will bring forward a range of verified digital assets that have been assigned a unique value through blockchain technology. HYBE’s latest move would also ensure the authenticity of said assets, reducing the circulation of counterfeit products.

Explaining the implementations of the association via photo cards, Bang outlined what the future holds or NFTs at HYBE. An example could be physical photocard (often found inside albums or at concerts) made digital. The corporations could build virtual versions of photocards that can be digitally authenticated and circulated virtually amongst fans on platforms such as Weverse. Additional features of digital photocards could include dynamic visuals (moving images), music and/or the voice of the artist to be played when clicked on it.

While this was only an example given to make the association easier to interpret, Bang did not explicitly mention when digital photo cards will be created and whether this eradicates the existence of physical photocards altogether. “It seems like it won’t be long before we can use digital photocards,” he stated.

Global K-pop Girl Group

Following SM Entertainment and MGM Group’s global boy group project, NCT Hollywood, HYBE America in association with UMG will be launching a global K-pop girl group.

The main feature of this project includes a U.S.-based local training system, ensuring trainees benefit from everything HYBE and UMG have to offer. Other features include a crew of highly-trained vocal coaches, producers and choreographers who have worked with global pop stars along with physical and mental health experts to guide the trainees.

The training model is uniquely molded, fusing HYBE’s expertise with other requirements suited to the U.S. music market. Aside from this, UMG’s extensive network will aid in the distribution and marketing efforts.

Global auditions to join the group are now open and will run till November 28th.

HYBE Japanese Boy Group

HYBE Japan will be hosting global auditions to find three trainees to form a group with I-Land participants K, Nicholas, EJ and Taki.

The audition program, &Audition, will be broadcast live in Japan starting 2022 and streamed worldwide on YouTube.

SM Entertainment and YouTube To Remaster Classic K-pop Music Videos

0

Titled ‘Remastering Project,’ the exclusive collaboration will re-release retro K-pop music videos in high definition

In an exclusive partnership with global video platform YouTube, South Korean label SM Entertainment has announced the ‘Remastering Project’— a technology-driven approach to reintroducing classic hits that laid out the foundation of K-pop.

The Remastering Project aims at elevating the quality of more than 300 K-pop music videos and audio tracks to a format suitable for today’s digital platforms. With better clarity and sound quality, fans can enjoy hits from veteran K-pop acts such as H.O.T., BoA, S.E.S and more. Considering the exponential boom of K-pop in the past decade, the creators of K-pop and YouTube’s partnership aims at contributing to the growth of the Korean music industry.

The partnership will further educate the global community about the history and evolution of K-pop through various campaigns including YouTube original content and YouTube Shorts challenges. This will be the second time in the recent past where YouTube has collaborated with a major K-pop label to promote its short-content feature. Earlier this year, BTS held its ‘Permission To Dance Challenge’ on YouTube Shorts which saw fans post their entries from around the globe including countries like Russia, India, South Korea, U.K, U.S. and more

SM Entertainment’s latest girl group, aespa, is also set to contribute to the partnership. Reimaging legendary girl group S.E.S’s hit single, “Dreams Come True,” the monster rookie girl group will reinterpret the existing music video, creating a brand-new take on its original style and flow.

Elaborating on SM’s legacy at a press conference held earlier today, Sung Su Lee, CEO of SM Entertainment expressed, “Music videos are SM’s precious assets that contain everything that SM pursues and aspires. They are comprehensive contents that represent the history of K-pop and SM’s heritage that stands the test of time.” Commenting on the partnership, Sun Lee, Head of Music Partnerships (Korea & Greater China) and Artist Relations (APAC) at YouTube said, “I am delighted to be able to introduce more diverse Korean music contents to users around the world through this remastering project. YouTube will continue to support and cooperate with the Korean music industry for the digitalization and growth of the Korean music industry.”

H.O.T.’s “Descendants of Warriors”—the first release under the partnership— is now available on SMTOWN and the entertainment giant’s secondary YouTube channel, SM STATION. Other artists whose music videos will soon be featured under the partnership include S.E.S., SHINHWA, FlyTo The Sky, and BoA.

EXCLUSIVE! ‘Anamika was one of those CHALLENGING PROJECTS that I did’, Casting Director Parag Chadha SHARES an interesting insight from the Casting World, his journey and more

0

Casting director Parag Chadha opens up about his journey in the glitzy world of entertainment.

MUMBAI: Casting isn’t an easy field as it has been perceived by most of them, it indeed has a lot of pressure that comes along to create the right cast for a project. The Casting Director is the vision behind every film or shows that the audience sees. They give faces to the characters that are written by the writer and visualised by the director.

Also read: Exclusive! Rushad Rana roped in for Vikram Bhatt’s Cold

Well, one such casting director is Parag Chadha, he has been a strong pillar in the industry with his vision and more than a decade long journey, but apart from casting there is a lot more than Parag has to share, check it out.

Talking about the journey, were you always inclined towards casting or you had any other plans?

I was never really inclined towards casting, I had no clue how the process was. I wanted to become an actor and I signed a couple of projects as well but they didn’t reach the light of the day. Then I took up a job at Yash Raj Studios in Casting, that’s where the interest developed and it has been 11 years, I have been a part of this world and I enjoy it thoroughly. I like putting faces to the characters.

Have you faced any challenges regarding casting? Can you share

There are tons of challenges in every field nowadays, nothing is easy. I remember I did the casting for a couple of films for Yash Raj Film. Later, I started getting calls from the TV agencies, as one wouldn’t say no to work I took up the work, I kept doing Tv shows around 45 shows. Then I realised that a lot of films and advertising people didn’t want to work with me as they thought I didn’t have any database for actors they would cast. Due to which I had to do quite a few ad films for free to prove them that I know how to segregate my work between tv and films. It did take a lot from me just to prove my mettle. Now, we have more than 600 ads and multiple films under our repertoire as a company.

How prominent is the term ‘Casting couch’ for you as a Casting Director, have you faced any backlash due to it?

I wouldn’t say I have faced backlash due to the term Casting Couch, one definitely needs to be cautious of the job profile. It does come with immense responsibility, because of some elements in the society the word, the field casting is not looked into the correct light. I feel that there are good and bad people everywhere, one shouldn’t take advantage of their seat. This chair gives you bread and butter, It is definitely not the case with me.

Which was your most challenging project and why?

Every project comes with a new challenge, I feel Anamika was written and directed by Vikram Bhatt which stars some eminent names like Sunny Leone, Sonali Sehgal, Shehzad Shaikh and more. That was one of those projects where I invested a lot of time as we had to pull in some big names. I wouldn’t call it challenging but the process was a little lengthier than others. There is a challenge in everything that we do on a daily basis but you always pull through.

It has been a trend that many actors are cast due to their social media popularity, what are your thoughts on this?

It is an advantage and disadvantage both for an artist. The advantage is that you can put your work, content that you can put on Instagram. The drawback is that not having followers is sometimes seen when you are casting for a web show and we are looking for primary characters. Some platforms do give a lot of importance to the PR and the fan following rather than finding an actor. We as an agency also need to strike balance between people who are extremely good actors but might not be very known on social media but they do have the potential and then there are others who are content creators or influencers who are trying to venture out in acting. The business model of OTT platforms or films is such that they try to bring out as much as possible PR value from their artist so we have to adjust accordingly.

as
it
was
for
us
shooting
the
film”.

Actor
Rinzing
Denzongpa
shares,
Squad
has
been
an
amazing
journey.
We’ve
seen
everything
through
this
film

extreme
weather
and
logistic
issues
due
to
restrictions
during
the
pandemic
but
yet
we
were
more
on
top.
I’m
proud
to
have
this
as
my
debut
film
and
it’s
been
an
honour
working
with
Nilesh.
I
am
truly
looking
forward
to
the
audience
experiencing
the
spectacle
that

Squad

is”.

Squad
will
premiere
on
ZEE5
on
12th
November
2021.
